Anjana Neta Seva

Lighting Up Rural Eyes with Care

The Anjana Netra Seva initiative is a vital self-funded program launched by AGMSWT in 2021 to combat vision impairment and promote eye health among vulnerable populations. Prioritizing students and elderly individuals, the initiative focuses on detecting and managing Specific Eye Conditions (SEC) and Presbyopia, ensuring early intervention and corrective measures.

Conducted by qualified eye specialists using advanced ophthalmic instruments, this initiative operates in a mobile setup, reaching underserved and remote areas where access to eye care services is limited. By proactively identifying and treating vision problems, AGMSWT aligns with the Government of India’s National Program for Control of Blindness & Visual Impairment (NPCB & VI), supporting the national mission to prevent blindness and promote universal eye health coverage.

Since its inception, the program has served over 1,00,000 beneficiaries, offering critical eye care services to individuals in Jhargram, Hooghly, Bankura, Purba Bardhaman, Paschim Bardhaman, South 24 Parganas, and Murshidabad districts.

The primary goal of the Anjana Netra Seva initiative is to detect, prevent, and manage vision impairments among high-risk groups, particularly students and the elderly, by ensuring accessible and quality eye care services.

Objectives

  • Early Detection and Treatment – Identifying Specific Eye Conditions (SEC) such as cataracts, refractive errors, and presbyopia at an early stage to enable timely intervention.
  • Improving Academic Performance – Conducting vision screenings in schools and educational institutions to diagnose vision impairments affecting students' learning abilities.
  • Enhancing Quality of Life for the Elderly – Providing free eye screenings, consultations, and recommendations for corrective measures like spectacles and cataract surgeries.
  • Mobile Eye Care Services – Deploying mobile eye care units to bring vision screening facilities to remote and underserved regions, ensuring wider outreach.
  • Preventing Avoidable Blindness – Supporting the National Program for Control of Blindness & Visual Impairment (NPCB & VI) by addressing preventable causes of blindness through screening, treatment, and awareness campaigns.

Geographical Coverage

Since 2021, the program has successfully providing eye care services to over 1,00,000 individuals. Our initial work began in Horekhali Gram Panchayat area, and has now expanded to multiple districts across West Bengal including Murshidabad, Jhargram, Paschim Bardhaman, and Hooghly.

Impact

  • Early Detection of Vision Problems: Thousands of individuals, including students and the elderly, have received timely diagnosis and treatment, preventing further deterioration of vision.
  • Improved Educational Outcomes: School children with refractive errors have been provided with prescription glasses, enhancing their ability to learn and perform academically.
  • Better Quality of Life for Seniors: Elderly individuals suffering from age-related vision loss have been guided toward corrective measures, enabling them to lead independent and fulfilling lives.
  • Reduced Cases of Preventable Blindness: By identifying conditions like cataracts and glaucoma early, the initiative has prevented numerous cases of irreversible blindness.
  • Strengthening the National Mission: The program aligns with the Government of India’s vision to combat blindness, reinforcing India’s commitment to eye health for all.

Future Plans

  • Expand to More Districts – Increase outreach to additional rural and tribal regions where access to eye care remains inadequate.
  • Strengthen School Vision Screening Programs – Scale up student-focused vision screening, ensuring all children receive timely vision correction.
  • Increase Awareness on Eye Health – Conduct mass awareness campaigns about eye diseases, early symptoms, and preventive eye care.
  • Collaborate with Eye Hospitals – Partner with leading eye care institutions to facilitate free or subsidized cataract surgeries and specialized eye treatments.
  • Enhance Technological Integration – Deploy advanced eye care equipment for more precise screenings and diagnostics.

As the program continues to expand and evolve, AGMSWT remains dedicated to bridging healthcare gaps, making quality eye care a fundamental right rather than a privilege.

Together, we are working toward a future where every individual, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to see the world clearly.
