Free Spectacles Distribution Program

The Free Spectacles Distribution Program, supported by the National Program for Control of Blindness & Visual Impairment (NPCB & VI), is a vision care initiative designed to address and correct vision impairment among school-going children and elderly individuals. Since its launch in 2021, the program has successfully distributed free spectacles to beneficiaries across seven districts – Jhargram, Hooghly, Bankura, Purba Bardhaman, Paschim Bardhaman, South 24 Parganas and Murshidabad.

Objectives

  • Restoring Clear Vision - Provide prescription-based spectacles to individuals with Specific Eye Conditions (SES) and Presbyopia.
  • Promoting Healthcare Equity - Prioritize underserved and economically disadvantaged populations, ensuring free access to vision care.
  • Preventing Long-Term Vision Loss - Encourage early diagnosis and intervention to reduce the risk of permanent vision impairment.

Target Beneficiaries

1. Old Age Persons (Presbyopia Correction) - Presbyopia, an age-related condition, leads to difficulty in reading and performing close-up tasks. The program provided free reading glasses to help elderly individuals regain their ability to read, work, and maintain an independent lifestyle.

2. School-Going Children (Refractive Error Correction) - Many children struggle in school due to undiagnosed vision problems, leading to poor academic performance and reduced confidence. The initiative ensured that school children with Specific Eye Conditions (SES) received corrective spectacles, enabling them to learn effectively.

Impact

  • Improved Educational Outcomes - Children with vision impairments experienced a noticeable improvement in academic performance after receiving corrective lenses. Teachers reported better concentration and class participation among students who previously struggled due to poor eyesight.
  • Enhanced Quality of Life for the Elderly - Elderly individuals regained the ability to read, work, and manage daily tasks independently, leading to greater confidence and well-being. Cases of falls and accidents due to poor vision decreased, improving overall safety and mobility.
  • Strengthened Eye Health Awareness - Community engagement initiatives educated families on the importance of eye care, promoting regular check-ups and preventive eye health practices.
